Matt’s Musings- All Star Spectacular
July 11, 2011 by Grove City Ohio Events · Leave a Comment
- Ahhhhh, MLB All-Star week, what a great week to see the best of the best play against each other for league supremacy….. If only we ACTUALLY got to see the players the fans voted in actually play in the game. As of the writing of this article, 16 players have backed out of the Mid-Summer classic, including the three Yankee starters and about half of the starting pitchers chosen for the AL squad. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but the All-Star game has completely lost its luster to me ever since they tried to make the game count for something, because if the players won’t take it seriously, then why should the fans? If the fans are going to vote you in, at leats have the decency to play the 1-3 innings that they usually have them play and deal with it, the fans want to see you, not who each league’s “manager” thinks should be an All-Star.
- Looking ahead to after the All-Star (If you can call half the of the roster All-Stars) game, we come to one of my favorite times of year, the trade deadline. This year’s deadline proves to be even more entertaining because the teams that are usually the sellers (Cleveland, Kansas City, Florida, Arizona, etc.) are buying this year, so expect to see some wacky names come up as trade bait in the next few weeks
- Moving away from the MLB, it’s now time to update on the NFL and the lockout situation. Simply put, there is no update. Both sides are CLAIMING that they want to strike a deal by July 21st, but I also want to be able to successfully complete a marathon on my hands, but we can’t get everything we want. Strap yourselves in, folks, if a deal doesn’t get done before the 21st, I would expect the league to start canceling games….
Tweet of The Week
“@berg_matt: Bet Heavy on Charlie”
Our first tweet of the week winner comes courtesy of BigDaddyLew52 when I posed the question “Which will happen first….. end of NFL lockout or Charlie Sheen finds work in Hollywood?”
Five Things I’ve thought about Non-Sports Related
1. I am really excited for the final Harry Potter film to finally be released, mainly because even though I’ve only read the last chapter of each book, I’ve grown quite fond of the characters and wanna see how this all plays out
2. Another movie I am pumped about seeing, Captain America, looks better and better with each new trailer. I’m a big comic book nerd and so far the only bad comic book film I’ve seen this year was Green Lantern, and I think Captain America is going to be a Star-Spangled display of awesome.
3. Coffee is not a dinner drink. Sorry, had to be said. Coffee tastes good with many different things but when I saw a guy tear into a steak burrito with a jumbo sized cup of piping hot coffee, I could no longer defend coffee-for-dinner drinkers. Some combos are just not supposed to happen
4. Get a deal done Washington. it’s called compromise, people give things up in negotiations, not demand more and expect the other side to cave (I’m looking at you Mr. Speaker)
5. Why don’t I have more followers on twitter? Follow me at @berg_matt and then while you’re there follow Grovecityradio.com at @GroveCityRadio . See you all next week
Matt’s Musings- Locked Out, And No One is Looking For the Key
July 3, 2011 by Grove City Ohio Events · Leave a Comment
- Does anyone really miss the National Football League yet? Has anyone lost sleep over the National Basketball Association locking up shop? I ask this because I for one am fed up with both sports’ obscene level of greed and self indulgence at a time when most of us are just trying to get by.
- Don’t get me wrong, I am just as much a fan of seeing the Cleveland Browns live or on TV as anybody, but I can’t support players that are demanding 50% of the entire league’s profit
- But I can’t get behind the multi-billionaire owners who are crying over an additional 1 billion dollars off of the top of the profits BEFORE they even consider splitting the remaining profits. That’s as if you were to buy a pizza for you and a friend to split, but before you split the pizza you got to take two pieces no questions asked, THEN split what was left. That’s not fair at all
- Both sides are digging in thinking that public opinion is going to side with them on the issue, but really they are losing more support than they are gaining. Lockouts and strikes never look good for millionaire athletes and billionaire owners, mainly because their fan base can’t fathom quarreling over money that the fans may never come close to gaining for themselves. To the average fan, it looks like a case of the rich complaining they’re not rich enough, and that just does not bode well for the NFL.
-The NBA is even worse, as 22 of the 30 teams claim to be losing money now that the inmates are running the asylum (A certain globally televised decision and obvious case of player collusion had something to do with that)
-The owners want to reign in the players, with a hard salary cap and tighter contract restrictions. The players, content with being “in charge”, feel the current system is perfect the way it is as it gains them the most money possible.
- The NBA is at a crossroads. If the players win, then you will see teams like Sacramento, Minnesota, Cleveland, Toronto, Golden State, and other small market teams fold under with every above average player joining forces and taking their talents to Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Orlando, and Chicago to form “Super Teams” that make the rest of the league obsolete. If the owners win, each team will have one or two stars and the league will have the parity it has been missing over the years.
-I’d love to predict how these will shake out, or give you the side I’m supporting for both sports. Unfortunately, I could care less about millionaires complaining over more money, so I’ll go watch some baseball, let Bud Selig enjoy my hard earned money….
